The Australian Citizen Science Association invites you to join us in Adelaide from February 7-9, 2018 as we bring together citizen science practitioners, participants, thought leaders and decision makers for the Australian Citizen Science Conference #CitSciOz18. The aim of CitSciOz18 is to showcase best practice citizen science and share project outcomes from across Australia and the world. Anyone involved in citizen science is welcome to join in – it’s an opportunity to share your experiences, insights, questions and ideas. We particularly welcome input from keen participants in citizen science!

Invitation to Participate

The Conference Organising Committee for CitSciOz18 invite you to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation. Before submitting your abstract, please ensure that you have thoroughly read the below guidelines and criteria. Proposals must be submitted via the Abstract Submission Portal by the revised closing date of Friday 20 October 2017.

Guidelines for Abstract Submission

Abstracts are welcome on any topic, but should fit into at least one of the presentation themes below. When submitting your abstract, please select all relevant themes so convenors can best place your abstract in the relevant stream.

One Presentation Rule – Oral Presentations

Delegates may submit only one abstract as the presenting author for oral presentations (long talks & speed talks).  Delegates are free to serve as a non-presenting author on multiple abstracts.

Presentation Types

CitSciOz18 will feature the following presentation types. All are equally valued contributions and different presentation formats may be best suited to different kinds of content. Delegates are encouraged to select the presentation format that best suits the material to be presented.

  • Long Talks (15 minutes: 12-minute talk + 3-minute Q&A)

Typically, long talks will be complete stories or largely finished research projects, with clear outcomes and conclusions. They should be placed in a broad context and therefore be of general interest beyond the immediate subject area. Abstracts will be placed in sessions based on themes selected by the submitting author (see above).

  • Speed Talks (7 minutes: 6-minute talk + 1-minute changeover)

The short duration of speed talks is well-suited to short stories, with one main idea or result, in a topical subject area that could, for example, be published as a short communication. Typically, they will involve relatively simple or well-established methods and study designs that do not require detailed explanation.

 Speed talks will be presented in 1-hour blocks of 10 talks (max) followed by a 20-minute discussion period during which all presenters will be available for discussion with members of the audience.

  • Poster (Posters will be on display throughout the entire conference)

The posters provide opportunities for relaxed discussion. Poster presenters MUST be by their poster during their nominated poster session. Delegates may submit more than one abstract for a poster. More details on posters coming soon.

  • Poster and Speed Talk (Poster and 7 minutes: 6-minute talk + 1-minute changeover)

Presenters may select the option to present a Speed Talk and also a Poster about the speed talk content. Speed talks wills be scheduled throughout the conference, to allow presenters to draw attention to their poster, and engage in extended discussion during the dedicated poster session.

  • Symposia (1 hour)

Delegates are also invited to submit proposals for symposia. Each symposium will be one-hour long.

As the Symposium Organiser you can utilise this hour in many different ways and you are responsible for coordinating the timing and content of all presentations. Symposium organisers should act as leadership for the session, guiding speakers in developing their talks, coordinating PowerPoints, speaker seating, timing, and facilitating the level of audience involvement you would like. Final allocation of presentations to each symposium will be at the discretion of the conference organising committee.

  • Workshops (2 hours)

Each workshop will be 2 hours long. Workshops should be interactive with an aim to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing between participants. Workshops should be structured to ensure that goals of the workshop can be realistically achieved in a 2-hour period. As the Workshop Organiser you can utilise the 2 hours in many different ways and you are responsible for coordinating the timing of the workshop. Workshop Organisers should act as leadership for the session, guiding participants through activities, and also coordinating PowerPoints if needed, seating and table arrangements, timing, and facilitating the kind of participant involvement you would like.


Abstract Selection Criteria

The conference organizing committee will attempt to accommodate the preferred presentation type for all delegates, but inevitably the number of talks, workshops, and symposia that can be accommodated in the program is limited. For CitSciOz18, if the demand for oral presentations (both long and short) exceeds the available time slots, then the Committee will review all abstracts and some delegates may be asked to consider the option of presenting a poster.

The criteria used to assess abstracts may include:

  • relevance to the theme of the conference and overall objectives of citizen science
  • scientific merit, originality, and interest
  • compliance with the word count and format requirements for abstracts

Abstract Submission

To make a submission, you will need to write an abstract (summary) of your presentation. We have provided guidelines on writing an abstract here. When submitting your abstract you will be required to provide the following information.

  • Abstract title: a brief, interesting and explicit description of the presentation (<15words)
  • Preferred presentation type
  • Relevant theme(s) your abstract aligns with
  • Name and position of lead presenting author
  • Authors’ name/s (lead author is normally expected to present the material)
  • Authors’ affiliations
  • Abstract (maximum length 250 words)
  • Biography of presenting author (max. length 40 words) i.e. name, present role, area of research interest
  • Acknowledgement that you intend on registering and attending CitSciOz18 if your abstract is accepted

Early submission of abstracts is encouraged. A last-minute rush has been known to crash the system, so please submit your abstract well before the closing date if possible, to avoid frustration.


Notification of Abstract Acceptance

Notification of abstract acceptance will be sent to submitting authors in November, 2017.
