Queensland 2018/19 Local Government Levy Ready Grants Program now open

The Queensland government has just opened the one-off $5m 2018/19 Local Government Levy Ready Grants Program.

qld gov EnvThe grant program is being administered by the department of Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs on behalf of the Department of Environment and Science and aims to assist Queensland councils in setting up the infrastructure required for successful implementation of the waste disposal levy in 2019.

Local governments can apply for funding under the 2018/19 Local Government Levy Ready Grant Program for infrastructure such as fencing, security cameras, traffic control, weighbridges, gatehouses, IT upgrades and signage.

Applications close 12 October 2018.

Applicant type Project requirements Funding per applicant Closing date
Local governments in the levy zone, and in the non-levy zone that expect to receive levyable waste. Project proposals are for Local government waste disposal facilities that have an environmental authority to dispose of 2,000 tonnes or more of waste, and are planned to be operational for the next 5 years at minimum.

Projects are to introduce infrastructure that will:

  • facilitate accurate collection of the levy
  • ensure adequate security and operational site controls

Projects must be completed by 28 June 2019.

 Up to 70% of eligible items.

What will be funded?

  • Weighbridges and gatehouses
  • IT upgrades
  • Security (lighting, fencing, bollards, barriers, gates)
  • Utilities (energy, water, internet)
  • Traffic control (signage, traffic lights)
  • Other necessary infrastructure that will support successful implementation of the levy

What will not be funded?

  • Pre-planning activities that commence prior to the date of funding approval
  • Works already commenced or completed
  • Upgrades to existing or purchase of secondary weighbridge
  • Works for facilities that are not waste disposal facilities (i.e. transfer stations)
  • Purchase of core business capital equipment
  • Land acquisition
  • Costs associated with preparing the grant proposal
  • On-going costs
  • In-kind contributions
  • Projects that have already received funding from other grant programs
