Seed Grants available for ACSA Members – call for applications!

ACSA is excited to announce a new initiative.  As a way of giving back and investing in our members we’ve started the ACSA Seed Grants. The Seed Grants are $500 each and will be awarded to three ACSA members to seed their professional growth or their project’s growth in line with ACSA’s strategic goals of Participation and Practice. These goals are: Participation - Encourage & promote broad and meaningful participation of society in citizen science so people become partners in creating science & increasing science literacy. For example (but not limited to): Activities that encourages participation in a citizen science project, could be a workshop, an event or a school outreach program or an app. Development of a citizen science project that aims to meet these goals Resources or training…

Caren Cooper, one of our exciting keynote speakers for #CitSciOz18, has a new book out "Citizen Science: How Ordinary People are Changing the Face of Discovery". Released in the USA about a year ago, it is now available in the UK, and ACSA is excited to have been sent three free copies from the London publisher...which we will be offering as conference prizes! Professor Muki Haklay, University College London, has written a blog post reviewing the book, which you can read here. Have you read the book? Let us know your thoughts! The information is ingrained in the image, so there is less onus to get the accompanying text correct! You can make great graphics for free through the website www.canva.com. The Call for Abstracts for the 2018 Australian Citizen Science Conference is now OPEN! Please refer to the abstracts page on the conference website for all the guidelines on abstract submission, including: * presentation themes * presentation types * abstract selection criteria * key dates, and * the Abstract Submission Portal The Call for Abstracts will be open for 4 weeks only...closing date is 10 October 2017. Don't leave it to the last minute - get cracking and submit your abstract pronto! Notification of abstract acceptance will be sent to submitting authors in November, 2017. On the August 17th Erin Roger, Amy Slocombe and Michelle Neil, together with Streamwatch coordinator Greg McDonald, hosted a South Korean delegation at the Australian Museum in Sydney. Ms Park (Dongguk University) and Mr Kim (Korea University) were in Australia on a research trip to gather information for their new citizen science project "Building a Citizen Science Platform in South Korea". It was interesting to chat with people who are just starting to realise the potential of citizen science, and who are seeking to learn from countries who are ahead in this space. Ms Park and Mr Kim are aspiring to establish citizen science as a mainstream scientific strategy for their country and it was rewarding to be able to share ACSA's story with them, and a great opportunity for us to reflect on how far we've come in such a short…
