2021 Seed Grant – MYOCOmmunity Applied Mycology Progress Report

By Ema Corro, winner of a 2021 ACSA Seed Grant Our project aims to use citizen science to rapidly increase knowledge of fungal taxonomy and ecology. As part of this we have been training volunteers to record sightings of fungi using iNaturalist, to take and describe herbarium specimens and do microscopy and DNA work on fungi. The equipment we bought with the ACSA grant has allowed us to show volunteers how to extract DNA from mushrooms and environmental samples for sequencing and tests for environmental DNA. For the next stages of our project we are planning to study the effects of storm damage on soil fungi and do some pilot runs sequencing environmental DNA in animal scats. Conservation Impacts of Citizen Science

The Participatory and Citizen Science Working group from the Society of Conservation Biology is leading a new project called "Conservation Impacts of Citizen Science." This project seeks to document the broad ranging conservations impacts and outcomes of citizen science within communities all around the world. They are looking for citizen science project managers and leaders to contribute information about the associated conservation outcomes that have resulted from their previous, or ongoing, citizen science projects. These conservation outcomes could be things such as policy changes, evidence of successful conservation management, changes to resource management programs, etc. If you would like to join the project please click here and help them to build a more holistic picture of the tangible benefits of citizen science from around the world.

Leah is a PhD candidate with the University of Sydney exploring the potential role of citizen science in policy and practice in preventive health as a means to complement or strengthen how the public engages in research and decision-making for chronic disease prevention. ACSA Seed Grant Winners

Congratulations to the recipients of ACSA's Seed Grants for 2020 - Jordan Gacutan and Karen Guymer! The Seed Grants were designed as a way of giving back and investing in our members, with two $1,000 grants available to ACSA members to seed their professional or project's growth in line with ACSA's strategic goals of Participation and Practice.With 12 high quality applications for just 2 grants, our judging panel had a tough time indeed! Congratulations to our two winners: Jordan Gacutan - UNSW / Tangaroa Blue Foundation: The Seed Grant will be used to produce a 5 part video series on scientific sampling and their utility in marine debris monitoring. The videos will consist of theory and field demonstrations, and will aim to increase the scientific skill-set of citizen scientists working with marine debris across Australia. This week the National Recreational Fishing Conference was held in Hobart. The theme was “Our Fishing, Our Research, Our Recreational Future” with talks on how citizen science projects by recreational fishers are helping inform and improve both fresh and saltwater fisheries management. Projects featured included artificial reef building and monitoring by OzFish Unlimited as well as WA based Recfishwest’s Reef Vision, Ocean sunfish mapping. OZFish is a particularly interesting case because it is an example of a volunteer-based organisation of recreational fishers focused on protecting and, importantly, restoring fish habitat that is also commercially sponsored, thus giving them a lot more funding, and thus scope, to actively improve the environment. Queensland Citizen Science grant recipients

The Australian Citizen Science Association congratulates the 21 recipients of the first ever Queensland Science Citizen Science Grants. The Queensland Citizen Science Grants opened to applicants earlier this year and were available to Queensland-based projects actively engaging citizen scientists and addressing one or more of the Queensland Citizen Science Strategy Goals.
